Most people live in a state of chronic dehydration and don't even realize it. We don't drink enough water; some of us don't drink water at all, except to swallow some type of medication. Some people place coffee, tea, and other beverages in the same category as water. It's not the same. Pure or plain water is what I'm talking about.
Drinking a healthy amount of water is vital to your overall health. A healthy amount depends on the person, your goal, your level of activity, and the expert you are listening to. Some experts suggest getting 64 ounces a day or eight 8-ounce glasses while others say half your body weight. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you are to drink 80 ounces of water. The general rule, however, is eight 8-ounce glasses a day.
Water has often been referred to as the forgotten secret to health. Here are five amazing reasons to drink more.
1. Lose weight: Drinking water helps you lose weight because it helps the body get rid of waste. It reduces hunger, curbs your appetite, and helps the body metabolize stored fat.
2. Alleviates some headaches and pain: Although there are many other reasons for headaches and back and joint pain, dehydration is one of the most common. Drinking a healthy amount of water helps to relieve headache and pains due to dehydration. It also helps to keep your joints and muscles lubricated so that you are less likely to get muscles cramps.
3. Healthier and younger looking skin: Water does wonders for your looks. You will look younger and healthier when your skin is properly hydrated. Water helps to replenish skin tissues, moisturize skin and increase skin elasticity. It flushes out impurities in your skin, leaving you with a clear, glowing complexion.
4. Helps with digestion and constipation: The colon needs water to do its job; dehydration can be a major cause of constipation. Drinking water speeds up your metabolism because it helps with digestion thus constipation. When you keep yourself well hydrated, food moves through your system easier and much more smoothly enabling you to have regular bowel movements.
5. Improves your immune system: Drinking plenty of water flushes harmful toxins and waste products out of the body thus boosting the immune system. An improved immune system helps fight against colds, flu and a number of other ailments.
The case for drinking water is strong. It flushes out your kidneys and your entire digestive system; it hydrates your body and brain; it allows your metabolism to function more effectively; and, finally, it positively impacts the way you look, feel, think, and act.
Using the words of Henry David Thoreau, "Water is the only drink for a wise man" -especially if the goal is better health.
